Greg Beckwith, University of Richmond Basketball Hall of Famer passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, he was 60 years old. Beck as he was fondly referred to as was way more than a good basketball player, he was a very good man and a very positive part of the entire Richmond community.
According to the statement released by Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade of the Atlantic 10 MBB, “Greg was beloved throughout the league as an A-10 Legend, a Richmond Hall of Famer, and a fixture in media as the Spiders longtime broadcaster, and he will be missed on the sidelines. On behalf of the entire league, our sympathy and prayers are with Greg’s family during this difficult time.”

Beckwith received one of the most coveted distinctions awarded to a Richmond basketball player: the Kevin Eastman Award. The Kevin Eastman award, granted by the University of Richmond four times in program history, goes to a player who demonstrates team leadership, effort, and excellent play.
Beckwith led the Spiders to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 1983-84, and they returned in 1985-86. He had 38 assists in four NCAA Tournament games, averaging 9.5 per game. Beckwith, a Second Team All-CAA and All-State pick in 1985-86, was named Richmond’s Most Improved Player twice (1983-84 and 1985-86). Beckwith stayed involved with the program, offering commentary for Spider men’s basketball radio and television broadcasts.
