Sean Kingston, a Jamaican-American former singer and rapper was arrested alongside his mother Thursday evening. According to reports, the arrest came hours after police raided his home in on the base of Fort Irwin, Florida. He was apprehended out in the middle of California’s Mojave Desert. Police said that Sean performed a gig on the base and then cooperated while base police detained him on a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant for fraud and theft.
On Thursday morning, the Broward Sheriff conducted a raid at Sean’s residence in Southwest Ranches, Florida. At the 14,000-square-foot (1,300-square-meter) residence in Southwest Ranches, a wealthy Fort Lauderdale neighborhood that is home to several celebrities and professional sports, such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins, Janice Turner, 61, Sean’s mother was taken into custody by Broward County police.
In addition to stating that the investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office will not comment on the particular accusations against Turner or if her 34-year-old son is also a target. Kingston is reportedly out of town and wasn’t there when the raid happened, according to local media. Prosecutors in Broward County sent any inquiries to the sheriff’s department. According to federal court records, she served about 1.5 years in jail after entering a guilty plea to bank fraud in 2006 for stealing more than $160,000.
His current sentence for trafficking stolen goods is two years on probation, according to data from the Florida Department of Corrections. Reporters present at the residence observed officials packing a loading van with cargo. Expensive sports vehicles encircled the mansion.
