Barcelona has terminated Xavi’s contract just a month after encouraging him to stay in the post; the Spaniard indicated in January his wish to quit the club at the conclusion of the season but changed his mind; former Bayern Munich and Germany manager Hansi Flick is poised to replace him.
Barcelona has fired head coach Xavi after three years in charge, with former Bayern Munich and Germany manager Hansi Flick set to replace him.
The 44-year-old Spaniard will take command of Barcelona’s season finale against Sevilla on Sunday before departing the club. The decision to fire Xavi comes a month after Barcelona convinced him to continue on as manager despite his earlier plans to quit at the end of current season.
According to Sky in Germany, Barcelona and Flick have struck a verbal agreement to become coaches. The Spanish club said they will make an announcement on Xavi’s replacement within the following few days.
A statement issued by the Catalan club read: “FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world.”
Xavi: It’s never easy to leave the club of your life.
In an open message posted on social media, Xavi said it was sad to depart but claimed he was happy to help pave the way for the club’s future stars despite a challenging season. “It is never easy to leave the club of your life, but I am very proud after two and a half years at the head of a dressing room that has been like a second family,” he wrote.
