Eric Estes of Oberlin, Ohio, the vice president for campus life, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning due to a “sudden illness.” He was announced dead on several internet platforms. The vice president, who was an astute thinker and a revolutionary, will be missed by so many who were affected by his teachings and modesty of influence and character.
About Eric Estes
At Brown University, Eric Estes is the vice president of campus life. Estes lives in Rhode Island’s Providence. He is in charge of 18 departments that employ approximately 450 people. In addition, he holds an academic position in American studies. Estes worked at Oberlin College and Conservatory for twelve years before coming to Brown, the last five of those years being spent as vice president and dean of students.
His life as a Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences
In addition, he taught comparative American studies and history. He also held positions as an associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, an associate dean in Student Life, and the Multicultural Resource Center’s longest-serving director in the center’s more than 20-year existence. Estes taught at Duke University prior to joining Oberlin. The German Historical Institute, the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, the Mellon and Ebert Foundations, and the German Historical Institute have all awarded him scholarships and fellowships. He was a Fulbright scholar in Germany.
His Achievements
Eric Estes holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Syracuse University and a B.A. with honors in history from Trinity. During the 2021–2022 academic year, he was a member of the Board of Trustees and sat on the Advancement, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Student Life, and Academic and Campus Affairs subcommittees. He was a member and then president of the Trinity College Alumni Association Executive Committee from 2014 until 2021, the year he joined the board.
